What should I chose, 4×4 and (or) SUV

For drivers and car lovers, the name “Jeep” is a uniform definition for all vehicles whose appearance and characteristics suggest the ability to move off the asphalt, robustness, strength… But, it is not so. Some things need to be clearly demarcated and you know exactly what it is about.

Jeep is a famous brand for the production of off-road vehicles, with outstanding off-road characteristics. Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee are typical representatives of this brand who made it famous.

Where is the difference?

SUV vs OffRoad

Real SUVs are characterized by several characteristics that make them off-road vehicles. In the first place, there is an all-wheel-drive – permanent or so-called “part-time” connected as needed.

There is, then, a gearbox designed to overcome extremely difficult and steep terrain, then differential locks (one, two or all three), then a real chassis that means that the engine, transmission and power transmission to the wheels are on a separate mostly steel frame on which is bodywork mounted.

In addition to the Jeep, the real off-road characteristics can be boasted of the Land Rover (Defender, Freelander, Discovery, Range Rover), Toyota (Land Cruiser), Nissan (Navara) and a few others that are still far from mentioned.

These are vehicles intended for driving on asphalt, but the true values show when they get off it. Because they are massive and not very comfortable, they consume relatively much fuel, supporters of this type of four-wheeler prefer to look at some other, more “civilized” models.

Unless they really took a bite out of the real “off-road,” for private or business reasons.

That is why the designers of modern cars came up with the idea to fill the gap and meet the demand for seemingly robust, but more comfortable, economical and more urban models.

In the second half of the 90s of the last century, a category called SUV – Sport Utility Vehicle was created. These modern “SUVs” have slowly but surely infiltrated the car market, only to become the best-selling category in Europe in 2015. 22.5 per cent of buyers from the old continent opted for them.

This phenomenon deserves a little attention and a deeper study – why is it so?

First of all, the representatives of the SUV category look like field ancestors. They are robust, produced on different platforms and in different sizes, have a large trunk, are comfortable, convenient, luxuriously equipped and are offered in different price categories.

Thus, it is not impossible to buy a new “jeep” for about 15 thousand euros. There are no real SUVs for that amount of money.

Since the owners in most cases use them for driving on urban roads, they often do not even need an integrated drive, so SUV models are also offered in variants with drive on only one axle.

True, there are numerous 4×4 versions, but with far less throughput than real SUVs. After all, nothing more than that is needed to drive to your favourite ski resort. With good tires, the modern electronically controlled all-wheel-drive performs the set task well enough.

In any case, even better than the average driver can use. The real difference between SUVs and “sports-recreational-vehicles” is noticed only when you get off a solid surface and start conquering the roads. Their SUV models can’t do much. The first serious obstacle stops them, while real SUVs pass by them without any problems. Either way, SUV mania has taken off so more and more manufacturers are embarking on a race for this promising market segment.
